A Sylvan Sauna

A one off sauna, designed in collaboration with Rich Anderson of Norwegian Wood, and based off a traditional ‘grindbygg’ log cabin.

The aim was to integrate log building with sauna culture, in order to evoke a more holistic and natural approach to living.

A traditional Norwegian timber-framing method, Grindbygg dates back to the Middle Ages.

Grindbygg uses a series of rigid timber frames called grinds, each made from two vertical posts (staver) and a horizontal beam (bjelke). These frames are spaced along the length of the sauna and connected with purlins. The entire structure is held together with wooden pegs and joinery, not metal fasteners with the frame left visible, giving the interior a sculptural, handcrafted feel.

The result is a structure that feels ancient, honest, and deeply connected to Nordic building culture.
